Volunteers
We would like to thank our volunteers for their commitment in helping us help the horses.
There is no way our organization could keep going without their dedication!
A lot of our volunteers are school age, either they are in high school or college. They come out on weekends, and sometimes through the week to help us. Volunteering doesn’t always mean “mucking stalls” or taking care of the horses; there are many other ways to help if you want to volunteer but you aren’t comfortable or are unable to work around the barn. We need help with our newsletter, fundraising, investigating possible neglect or abuse, and to make follow-up phone calls to the people that report neglect or abuse victims to us. We also need help with transporting horses from time to time.
Volunteer Opportunities
Around the barn: Cleaning stalls, feeding & watering, grooming, turning horses out, putting horses up, helping put hay up, and caring for the rescues in general (this may include caring for injured or sick horses.)
Riding: We need experienced riders to exercise the rescues when they are well enough to be ridden.
Newsletter: This includes writing articles and setting the newsletter up for printing.
Fundraising: This includes making phone calls to reserve booth space for certain events, helping set booths up, staying with the booth at the events to give out information, going to businesses asking for sponsorships, handing out brochures, coming up with new fundraising ideas; generally participating in our fundraisers (this should be a shared responsibility for more than one person so that one person doesn’t need to be at all of the events, or carry the “fundraising load” alone).
Investigation: This includes travel. We would like to have at least two investigators in each county in the Kentuckiana area. We never go on an investigation alone. Anyone interested would require training, and go on an investigation with an experienced member before going on one alone.
Trainer: We need a professional trainer to help with the horses. So far most of the horses we have rescued have either been very green, or not trained at all, and although most of us have the knowledge and experience ourselves, we work full time jobs and are unable (due to lack of time) to train these horses.
Pet Therapy: We work with a local rehabilitation hospital. In the past we have taken horses to the hospital for the patients to interact with (grooming, petting, etc.) Recently, we have decided to bring the residents up to our main facility so that they can have more interaction with the horses. We will need people with a lot of patience with kids, and experience with horses to help us with this. This will take place every other Friday during the day – probably early afternoon.
Trailering: Sometimes we have a rescue with several animals involved and may need more than one trailer. We need people with trailers (preferably multi-horse or stock) that are willing to help us with these type of rescues.
